IBM Opts for Dynamsoft's SDK to Build Document Scanning in its Datacap Navigator Web Solution
Accelerates Time to Market and Removes Need for an ActiveX Control for Web Scans
Banking, Insurance, Government, Healthcare, Retail, Telecom, Transportation, and Cross Industry
IBM® is a globally integrated technology and consulting company headquartered in Armonk, New York, and with operations in more than 170 countries. The company develops and sells software and systems hardware and a broad range of infrastructure, cloud and consulting services. It has a market cap of more than $140 billion. Its Datacap Mobile® solution enables organizations to streamline the capture, recognition, and classification of business documents. It also allows organizations to quickly and accurately extract important information from those documents for use by business users and in applications. To develop the web scanning component of Datacap, IBM opted for a software development kit (SDK). The main goal in using an SDK was so IBM could have a web scanning component that ran without an ActiveX control requirement. This would provide customers a choice for browser preference and enhanced security. The SDK helped IBM's development team achieve the accelerated time-to-market they sought and the removal of an ActiveX-dependent component for remote scanning they needed.
IBM is a globally integrated technology and consulting company headquartered in Armonk, New York. With operations in more than 170 countries, IBM attracts and retains some of the world's most talented people to help solve problems and provide an edge for businesses, governments and non-profits. The company develops and sells software and systems hardware and a broad range of infrastructure, cloud and consulting services. Today, IBM is focused on five growth initiatives - cloud, big data and analytics, mobile, social business and security. The company has a market cap of more than $140 billion.
IBM Datacap® is a cross-industry document capture and processing solution. It enables organizations to streamline the capture, recognition, and classification of business documents. It also allows organizations to quickly and accurately extract important information from those documents for use by business users and in applications.
Datacap used to provide web-based document scanning using ActiveX technology. Users could only scan from Internet Explorer and not from other popular browsers like Chrome® and Firefox®. The use of ActiveX technology is also known in the industry to bring about some user security concerns that come with its installation. IBM needed a modern web scan solution that provides cross-browser support while ensuring better security.
IBM was interested in using an SDK for web scan capabilities instead of coding from scratch. Datacap is a broad solution with many capabilities. The development team felt using an SDK for the scan component would provide a fairly quick path to implementation. It would allow the team to save time and instead focus on other key components. IBM opted for Dynamsoft's Dynamic Web TWAIN SDK.
Use of Dynamsoft's SDK did accelerate delivery of the total solution. IBM developers were able to leverage the SDK to quickly implement scanning capabilities.
Dynamsoft's Dynamic Web TWAIN SDK
The SDK has built-in support for local image editing and saving options to a variety of image formats. Documents captured with Dynamsoft's SDK can be saved to local/remote disk, databases, SharePoint® or other document repositories.
The key feature IBM sought was remote scan without requiring an ActiveX control. This was achieved with the HTML5/JS library of Dynamic Web TWAIN.
The SDK needed some enhancements to meet IBM-specific requirements. The IBM team worked with Dynamsoft to define features, cost structure and a timeline to deliver the requested enhancements. These needs were met and Dynamsoft continues to provide technical support as needed.
