Installing Dynamsoft SourceAnywhere for VSS Server

The Dynamsoft SourceAnywhere for VSS Server is written in C++ from scratch, which means that you don't need any additional components and frameworks to support the Server installation.

Configuration Requirement

Running the Setup

Running the setup is pretty straightforward and the setup wizard will guide you through all the steps.

Starting the Server

The server is installed as a system service, hence the server can be installed on any windows platforms which support service, such as Windows NT, 2000, XP, or 2003. It runs in the background with no user interface of any kind.

There are two ways to start the server.

One is through control panel: from Start Menu > Settings > Control Panel, select Administrative Tools, then Services. Right-click the Dynamsoft SourceAnywhere for VSS Server and select Start.

The other is through Server Manager:

VSS Database Consideration

The Dynamsoft SourceAnywhere for VSS Server does not necessarily need to be installed on the machine where the Visual SourceSafe database resides, even though that if the Server is installed on the same machine where the VSS database resides, it will have a better performance. It can be installed on a different machine from the one hosting the VSS database, as long as they are both on the same LAN. Nevertheless, the Dynamsoft SourceAnywhere for VSS Server does use the VSS Automation component (APIs), so the VSS Client component must be installed on the server machine hosting the Dynamsoft SourceAnywhere for VSS Server. Installing the VSS Client also installs the VSS APIs.
