TWAIN Overview

TWAIN defines a standard software protocol and API (application programming interface) for communication between software applications and image acquisition devices (the source of the data).

The four key elements in TWAIN are:

• The Application software - An application uses TWAIN protocol to acquire image or sound.
• The Source Manager software - This software manages the interactions between the application and the Source. It's provided by the TWAIN organization.
• The Data Source software - TWAIN compliant hardware driver. This software is usually installed when the hardware driver is installed.
• The Hardware - Scanner, Camera, etc.
