[Case Study] IBM Uses Dynamsoft’s HTML5 Imaging SDK in its Document Capture Software

HTML5 document capture

Accelerates Time to Market and Removes Need for an ActiveX Control for Web Scans

Brief Introduction

IBM® is a globally integrated technology and consulting company headquartered in Armonk, New York, and with operations in more than 170 countries. The company develops and sells software and systems hardware and a broad range of infrastructure, cloud and consulting services. Its Datacap Mobile® solution enables organizations to streamline the capture, recognition, and classification of business documents. The company has a market cap of more than $140 billion.

The Need – A Cross-Browser Web Scan Solution to Replace ActiveX

IBM Datacap® is a cross-industry document capture and processing solution. It had a web scanning module using ActiveX technology which has drawbacks like:

  • Users can only scan from Internet Explorer, but not from other popular browsers like Chrome, Firefox, and Safari.
  • ActiveX control brings about some user security concerns

IBM needed a modern web scan solution that provides cross-browser support while ensuring better security. IBM was interested in using an SDK for web scan capabilities instead of coding from scratch. The development team felt using an SDK for the scan component would provide a fairly quick path to implementation. It would allow the team to save time and instead focus on other key components.

The Solution – Dynamic Web TWAIN HTML5 SDK

IBM chose Dynamsoft’s Dynamic Web TWAIN to build its web-based document scanning module.

Dynamic Web TWAIN is a cross-browser TWAIN scanning SDK. It provides HTML5 / JavaScript TWAIN APIs which supports accessing scanners from all modern HTML5-compatible browsers on Windows, macOS, and Linux.

Dynamic Web TWAIN also comes with multiple imaging add-ons (webcam capture, barcode reader, PDF rasterizer and OCR) for the development of document management systems.

The Benefits – Increased Solution Delivery

Use of Dynamsoft’s SDK accelerates delivery of the total solution. By leveraging the Dynamic Web TWAIN SDK, IBM’s development team was able to quickly implement cross-browser web scanning capabilities. It allowed the team to save time and focus on the other key components.
