QUOTE

If you're going to try and tackle cross-browser scanning support on your own, you better be prepared to have a full time dedicated team for the job because browser technologies changes quickly. As a result, it's a no-brainer to instead purchase an SDK that can cut months to years of development time. And then there are the cost-savings. A good SDK can help significantly curb both development and support costs. This is what Dynamsoft's Dynamic Web TWAIN helped us realize for our es.capture and es.content solutions."

SUMMARY

Everteam.mea provides customers with its es.content solutions for enterprise content management. It covers the complete content acquisition cycle, from capture and editing to storage and sharing. It also provides advanced monitoring and notification tools. All everteam.mea enterprise content management solutions provide the capabilities to perform interactive and automated web scanning. Everteam.mea had already developed its own ActiveX for scanning in web browsers. But, the application now needed advanced, modern and cross-browser support control for web scanning. As a result the team concluded an SDK would help. Everteam.mea switched to using Dynamsoft's Dynamic Web TWAIN SDK to develop the scanning module. Now scanning can be accomplished from all browsers. Using the SDK saved Everteam.mea from investing more of its time in developing and supporting a module for many other browsers. Not only would it have taken much longer, the expenses would have significantly mounted. All of these concerns were removed by using Dynamsoft's SDK.

THE DEVELOPMENT TASK

The es.content solution is largely deployed and used by Everteam.mea's customer base. Users realize increased productivity, reduced overhead and shortened implementation times resulting from a paperless office. The application is designed to provide advanced batch capture workflows using a web-based pipeline. It supports custom objects, multi-stage processing and advanced error reporting. With advanced monitoring, administrators can follow content as it is captured, normalized, indexed and transformed. With a simple user interface, this allows them to quickly drill down to analyze results and individual steps.

All Everteam.mea solutions have a number of connectors to common business applications. These include email, Lotus Notes, digital asset management, and SharePoint. This enables the capture of various content formats to be directly saved into the application's content repository.

Developing such a comprehensive application is obviously a major task. Approximately 15 people comprised the company's team to do so. The application took six months to complete. However, this shortened timeframe was a result of adopting a software development kit (SDK) to expedite matters.

Everteam.mea had already developed its own ActiveX for scanning in Internet Explorer browsers. But, the application now needed cross-browser support. Scanning needed to be possible with Firefox and Chrome too. As a result the team easily realized an SDK would help.

AN SDK SOLUTION

Dynamic Web TWAIN SDK
Dynamsoft's Dynamic Web TWAIN SDK provide developers a simple way to deliver a TWAIN scanning module in a web application so they need write just a couple of lines of code in JavaScript. This is instead of taking months to learn the TWAIN standard. Then many more months would be required to develop an application with hundreds to thousands of lines of code. A finished application gives users key features for document scanning, uploading, editing, and document management within web browsers. The SDK has built-in support for local image editing and saving options to a variety of formats. Documents can be saved to local or remote databases or other repositories. It supports 32-bit / 64-bit Internet Explorer® (IE), Firefox®, Chrome®, Safari® and Opera® browsers on Windows, Linux, Mac OS X and Mobile.

Key technologies built into the SDK are ideal. For example, Sandbox ensures hassle-free communication by improving stability and compatibility with scanning devices while also improving security. Supported devices include TWAIN-compatible scanners, digital cameras or capture cards. Scanned documents can be saved to local, server, remote databases or other repositories. Extensive editing options include rotate, crop, mirror, flip, erase, sizing, zooming, annotating, and more.

A December 2014 update to the SDK added a JavaScript IntelliSense feature to increase programming speed and help reduce programmer errors. A 1D barcode reader was also added. Prior to that, in a June 2014 update, there was a new add-on to facilitate connections to TWAIN-based scanners in Google® Chrome versions requiring HTML5-based plugins. It's now well known in the industry that browser providers are phasing out browser plugins based on the Netscape Plugin Application Programming Interface (NPAPI). In May 2014 Google dropped support of NPAPI plugins for its Chrome browser. For this purpose, the Dynamic Web TWAIN SDK offers a newly developed HTML5 WebSocket plugin add on. So, it allows document scanning from within newer Google Chrome browser versions that don't allow NPAPI plugins. The SDK also continues to support NPAPI for use in legacy browsers.

REALIZED BENEFITS

Everteam.mea switched to using Dynamsoft's Dynamic Web TWAIN SDK for the scanning module. Now scanning can be accomplished from all browsers. Using the SDK saved Everteam.mea from investing a year or more of time developing a module for other browsers. Not only would it have taken much longer, the expenses would have significantly mounted. Then, there is the issue of supporting each scanning module. All of these concerns were removed by using Dynamsoft's SDK instead.
