Snapshot

IBM's Datacap Mobile® content management solution was previously limited in providing web-based document scanning using ActiveX technology via Internet Explorer and not from other popular browsers. A modern web scan solution was needed to allow a choice for browser preference and enhanced security. IBM opted for Dynamsoft's Dynamic Web TWAIN SDK.

Using Dynamsoft's SDK accelerated delivery of the total solution. The key feature IBM sought was browser-based document scanning without requiring an ActiveX control. This was achieved with the HTML5/JS library of Dynamic Web TWAIN.

About IBM

IBM is a globally integrated technology and consulting company headquartered in Armonk, New York. With operations in more than 170 countries, IBM develops and sells software and systems hardware and a broad range of infrastructure, cloud, and consulting services. IBM is focused on four main areas of business — cloud computing, artificial intelligence, computer hardware, and computer software. As of 2019, the company has a market cap of more than $114 billion.

A Technology Need

IBM's Datacap Mobile® solution enables organizations to streamline the capture, recognition, and classification of business documents. It also allows organizations to quickly and accurately extract important information from those documents for use by business users and in applications.

Datacap used to provide web-based document scanning using ActiveX technology. However, users could only scan from Internet Explorer and not from other popular browsers such as Chrome® and Firefox®. The use of ActiveX technology is also known in the industry to bring about some security concerns that come with its installation. IBM needed a modern web scan solution that provided customers a choice for browser preference as well as ensuring enhanced security.

Getting Going with a Solution

Dynamsoft's Solution
Instead of taking months to learn the TWAIN standard, then many more months to develop an application with hundreds to thousands of lines of code, the development team opted to use a software development kit (SDK). This would provide the quickest path to implementation and allow the team to focus on other key components.

IBM opted for Dynamsoft's Dynamic Web TWAIN SDK. Using Dynamsoft's SDK accelerated delivery of the total solution as IBM developers were able to leverage the SDK to quickly implement scanning capabilities.

The key feature IBM sought was remote scan without requiring an ActiveX control. This was achieved with the HTML5/JS library of Dynamic Web TWAIN.

Dynamsoft's Dynamic Web TWAIN SDK provides developers a simple way to deliver a TWAIN scanning module in a web application, so they only need write a few lines of JavaScript code. A completed application gives users key features for document scanning, uploading, editing, and document management within web browsers.

The SDK has built-in support for local image editing and saving options to a variety of image formats. Documents captured with Dynamsoft's SDK can be saved to local/remote disk, databases, SharePoint® or other document repositories.

The SDK needed some enhancements to meet IBM-specific requirements. The IBM team worked with Dynamsoft to define features, cost structure, and a timeline to deliver the requested enhancements. These needs were met and Dynamsoft continues to provide technical support as needed.

About Dynamic Web TWAIN

Dynamsoft's Dynamic Web TWAIN SDK provides developers a simple way to deliver a document scanning module (TWAIN, SANE or ICA) in a web application simply by writing just a couple of lines of code in JavaScript. This is instead of taking months to learn the related standards, then many more months to develop an application with hundreds to thousands of lines of code.

A completed application gives users key features for document scanning, uploading, editing, and document management within web browsers. This SDK supports 32-bit / 64-bit Internet Explorer® (IE), Edge, Firefox, Chrome and Safari® browsers on Windows®, Mac® OS X, Linux, iOS and Android.

The SDK has built-in support for local image editing and save options to a variety of image formats. Documents captured with Dynamsoft's SDK can be saved to local/remote disk, databases, SharePoint® or other document repositories.
