How to connect Visual Studio 2013 to Visual SourceSafe

Still using Visual SourceSafe (VSS) for version control? You are actually not alone. Although Microsoft has ceased updates for VSS a while ago, there are still companies using VSS. By staying with VSS, you may encounter compatibility issues when using newer versions of Visual Studio. The good news is you can use the latest version of SourceAnywhere for VSS Visual Studio plugin to connect Visual Studio 2013 to your VSS database. SourceAnywhere for VSS is a remote access and cross-platform add-on for VSS users. It enables fast and secure access to your VSS database remotely. The most recent update, SourceAnywhere for VSS v6.4, fully supports Visual Studio 2013.

How to use SourceAnywhere for VSS with VS 2013

  1. Install SourceAnywhere for VSS. If you don’t have the tool on your machine yet, you can download the 30-day free trial here. The Windows Client includes the Visual Studio IDE integration.
  2. Connect to your VSS database in SourceAnywhere for VSS Server Manager. SourceAnywhere for VSS provides a Server Manager program which allows you to manage your users, permissions and VSS databases. Manage VSS Databases - SourceAnywhere for VSS Server Manager
  3. Add your Visual Studio project to VSS database. After you’ve successfully set up SourceAnywhere for VSS, you can launch one of your VS projects. Go to menu Tools->Options->Source Control. Click Current source control plug-in and select Dynamsoft SourceAnywhere for VSS from the drop-down list and click OK. Select Source Control Plugin - Visual Studio 2013Then you can right-click the solution file in Solution Explorer of Visual Studio and click Add Solution to Source Control to add the project to your VSS database.
  4. Retrieve your project from another machine. To retrieve your project from another machine, simply click File->Source Control->Open from Source Control.

Besides working with the latest versions of Visual Studio, SourceAnywhere for VSS is compatible with the latest versions of Windows as well (Visit system requirements page to learn more). If you are still using Visual SourceSafe and planning to stay with it for a while longer, it’s highly recommended you try SourceAnywhere for VSS.
