Frictionless Installs for Connected Transportation at Geotab

Introduction

As a global leader in connected transportation, Geotab is connected with over 3.7 million vehicles and processes more than 55 billion data points every day. AI-driven insights may include fuel trends, EV battery life, driver behaviour, dispatch productivity and predictive maintenance – all helping to drive better safety and efficiency in fleet operations. 

Challenge

Every day, Geotab customers and partners install telematics devices in thousands of fleet vehicles and assets.  During each installation they need to capture a device serial number and VIN (Vehicle Identification Number). Geotab was using an open source barcode reading solution but the scanning was not always 100%, so installers were having to type the numbers in manually. This meant that the installation check process was taking longer than it needed to and the information captured was not always accurate. 

1, The Geotab team needed a reliable barcode reader with a high degree of accuracy that could deal with any scratched, blurred or damaged labels.

2, The package also needed to be lightweight to avoid hefty mobile downloads.

3, Security was a high priority to comply with industry regulations. Data needed to be kept local and secure on Geotab’s devices.

Solution

The team compared solutions from five leading barcode capture solutions and did internal demos for each. Dynamsoft Barcode Reader was the only product that could scan all barcodes successfully. The evaluation team immediately saw the value in the many configuration options for Customizing the look and feel of the scanner and for audible and haptic feedback to confirm successful scans. Security requirements were met by whitelisting at the domain level. It was a clear choice. The team set to work and within a month, the solution was ready for production.

Impact

Geotab’s success depends on getting fleet managers up and running and collecting data and insights as quickly as possible. With the new barcode capture solution, Geotab was able to remove friction points in getting customers online and is now checking 30,000 installs per month globally.

Based on the success of the scanning solution, customers also asked for the ability to scan camera IDs. This was implemented in just 2 months from request to release and also achieves a high degree of accuracy.
