QUOTE

Taking on the development of software components that are beyond your core capabilities can easily make you lose focus," said Muhammad Sohail, Account Manager for Avanza Solutions. "Maintaining focus on core application capabilities is critical for any software shop. Dynamsoft's Dynamic Web TWAIN SDK ensured we were able to stay focused on our customer's needs. In the end, this meant we could achieve customer satisfaction and revenue sooner than would otherwise be possible."

SUMMARY

In business for over 15 years, Avanza Solutions provides e-Business and e-Banking solutions to more than 300 clients in over 45 countries. Award-winning solutions include web and software applications for self-service banking and transaction processing, customer service and experience, and business automation and collaboration. One such application is the company's Unison CRM solution for banking. This is an enterprise-wide web-based application used by banks for several key capabilities. It provides customer interaction management and integrates with a bank's legacy systems. As with many application providers, building a robust application often requires components that are too time consuming, expensive or difficult to build in-house. For this application, it was the document scanning functionality. This was a key component to enable automation of manual document workflows related to customer transactions. Understanding it needed a powerful yet simple-to-use document scanning module, Avanza Solutions researched software development kits (SDK) to secure this capability off-the-shelf. After some research and testing of a few SDKs, it settled on Dynamsoft. As a result, it took just four months to build the Unison CRM application. Without Dynamsoft's SDK, it could have easily taken more than a year. The SDK not only saved immense time, it saved on immense additional development costs too.

THE TASK

One of Avanza Solutions' products is its Unison CRM solution. This is an enterprise-wide web-based application used by banks for several key capabilities. It provides customer interaction management and integrates with a bank's legacy systems. One key component of this application is to provide automation of manual document workflows related to customer transactions. This includes anything from statements to general customer communications. E-form management was seen as crucial to delivering a total banking CRM solution. In many cases, regulations call for paper-based documents to be digitally scanned and maintained, whether for basic records-keeping or audits.

Building a robust application often requires components that are too time consuming, expensive or difficult to build in-house. In this case, it was the document scanning functionality. Building just this component requires immense expertise. There are standards that are hundreds of pages long to deal with. Coding can also be thousands of lines on top of existing code. Then there is the cost of maintaining support for just this component on top of others. For most shops, document scanning is too critical to go it alone.

THE SOLUTION

Avanza Solutions required a robust and simple document scanning module for its Unison CRM application. After researching SDKs, Avanza Solutions settled on Dynamsoft to get that function off-the-shelf. Five Unison team members, from Avanza Solutions, were involved in deciding upon the SDK and integrating it with the Unison CRM application.

Dynamic Web TWAIN
Dynamsoft's Dynamic Web TWAIN SDK provide developers a simple way to deliver a TWAIN scanning module in a web application so they need write just a couple of lines of code in JavaScript. This is instead of taking months to learn the TWAIN standard. Then many more months would be required to develop an application with hundreds to thousands of lines of code. A finished application gives users key features for document scanning, uploading, editing, and document management within web browsers. The SDK has built-in support for local image editing and saving options to a variety of formats. Documents can be saved to local or remote databases or other repositories. It supports 32-bit / 64-bit Internet Explorer® (IE), Firefox®, Chrome®, Safari® and Opera™ browsers on Windows® and Mac® OS X.

Key technologies built into the SDK are ideal. For example, Sandbox ensures hassle-free communication by improving stability and compatibility with scanning devices while also improving security. Supported devices include TWAIN-compatible scanners, digital cameras or capture cards. Scanned documents can be saved to local, server, remote databases or other repositories. Extensive editing options include rotate, crop, mirror, flip, erase, sizing, zooming, annotating, and more.

As of April 2015, the SDK includes built-in functionality for image captures from webcams. This adds to recently built-in 1D barcode reading capabilities. As a result, the Dynamic Web TWAIN version 10.2 SDK is amongst the most comprehensively available for developing complete document management solutions. Another recent update to the SDK added a JavaScript IntelliSense feature to increase programming speed and help reduce programmer errors. Other updates have included a new add-on to facilitate connections to TWAIN-based scanners. This feature is for Google® Chrome versions requiring HTML5-based plugins. It's now well known in the industry that browser providers are phasing out browser plugins based on the Netscape Plugin Application Programming Interface (NPAPI). In May 2014 Google dropped support of NPAPI plugins for its Chrome browser. For this purpose, the Dynamic Web TWAIN SDK offers a newly developed HTML5 WebSocket plugin add on. So, it allows document scanning from within newer Google Chrome browser versions that don't allow NPAPI plugins. The SDK also continues to support NPAPI for use in legacy browsers.

REALIZED BENEFITS

Building a document scanning module would have taken a month's time but with Dynamsoft's SDK it was only a matter of integrating it with the Unison application. So, the SDK saved immense time. It also saved on immense additional development costs and technical support costs. Application expansion plans are in the works and the Avanza Solutions team is confident Dynamsoft's SDK will seamlessly scale as needed.
