Challenge
When surgical instruments and medical devices are sterilized, a chemical indicator is used, which consists of a reactive ink or pellet that undergoes a visible physical or chemical change, indicating that it has been exposed to defined conditions of a process such as sterilization, washing, disinfection, or thermal disinfection. Its purpose is to provide visual evidence confirming that the critical parameters of the process in which it was used have been met.
Rather than manually comparing the chemical indicator to a reference guide, it is placed in a Trazanto (a dedicated indicator card scanner), which automatically reads the image and gives the result. This dedicated physical scanner is ideal for use in sterile areas.
The chemical indicators contain a small GS-1 Data Matrix barcode which tracks the sterilization batch for compliance and traceability. Terragene was working on ways to develop an improvement in barcode reading efficiency.

Solution
The development lead’s prior experience with Dynamsoft Barcode Reader on another project made it the natural starting point for the team. Using the online demo, they quickly uploaded a complete range of sample indicator images to test whether they could be read consistently. They saw immediate success with the whole range of chemical indicators and quickly moved onto a free trial to do further testing and internal trials. After testing and selecting the Dynamsoft SDKs, implementation was swift. Within a week, the Dynamsoft libraries were fully integrated within Terragene's application.
