From 30 Minutes to 5: Streamlined Customer Onboarding with Passport Scanning for Skoot

Introduction

Thailand's scooter and motorbike rental industry serves millions of travelers each year, but behind the scenes, most rental shops still rely on paper-based workflows that slow down operations and create unnecessary administrative overhead. Skoot, a digital scooter rental marketplace and management platform, has set out to modernize this process. By integrating Dynamsoft’s MRZ Scanner into their partner app, Skoot transformed how rental shops verify passports, populate rental contracts, and manage bookings — all in a matter of seconds.

Today, Skoot works with over 150 rental shops nationwide, supporting more than 250,000 customers annually. Their mission is to bring speed, accuracy, and trust to scooter rentals across Thailand's tourism ecosystem.

Challenge

Before adopting Dynamsoft, rental shops faced a universal problem: everything was manual. Shops would spend up to 30 minutes per customer to:

• Physically examine a passport
• Manually transcribe customer details into a rental contract
• Photocopy the passport photo page for record keeping
• Complete the rest of the rental workflow by hand

During busy seasons, these steps created long queues, transcription errors, and lost revenue opportunities. Shops were limited in how many rentals they could process, and travelers were left waiting.

Skoot initially attempted to build an OCR solution from scratch, but early prototypes struggled with accuracy and required users to manually capture photos — often blurry or out of focus. It was clear that the team needed a more robust, automated approach.

Solution

Skoot integrated Dynamsoft’s MRZ Reader into their partner application, enabling fast, hands-free passport scanning directly from a mobile device camera.

How it works:

• 1The shop selects a scooter and rental dates from the Skoot app.
• 2The shop staff scans the renter’s passport using Dynamsoft's MRZ scanner.
• 3The SDK instantly extracts all MRZ data and the passport photo.
• 4The app auto-populates the rental contract, generates a PDF, and securely stores the data in AWS.
• 5The renter signs digitally, and the shop completes the handover process.

The Dynamsoft team also worked closely with Skoot’s developers to deliver a custom update — enabling not only MRZ data extraction but also returning passport image data, which is essential for generating complete digital rental contracts.

Integration was fast, taking approximately two weeks, supported by two internal developers and Dynamsoft’s technical team.
