The UK Royal Mail uses the RM4SCC (Royal Mail 4-State Customer Code. This is the name of the barcode character set. It is based on the Royal Mail 4-State bar code symbol and was created by Royal Mail. It’s used for its Cleanmail service that allows UK postcodes and Delivery Point Suffixes (DPSs) to be easily read by a machine. The barcode is placed above an address.

Each character uses four bars and two of these bars extend upward while the two others extend downward. This allows up to 36 possible symbols that can consist of 10 digits and 26 letters. This barcode consists of a start character, the postcode that is the longest part of the code, the Delivery Point Suffix (DPS), a checksum character, and a stop character.

Specifically, for the barcode, it is to be positioned in the bottom left corner of the Text & Code Area as follows. The barcode must be in at a pitch of 24 bars per 25.4mm. The bars of the code must be printed within an area that is 38.1mm long and 4.6mm high. A clear zone of > 2mm must be provided on all four sides surround the barcode.
